The history of Manerba del Garda
The name would be traced back to the presence of a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva, of which only a plaque in her honor remains, it was probably located in the place where the fortress was built. These places were already inhabited in prehistoric times, as many finds testify, and they also saw Roman settlements.
Charlemagne wrote a diploma in which he assigned rights to the Veronese monks of San Zeno over the areas dominated by the fortress on the promontory, only thanks to this writing it was possible to trace the existence of the aforementioned fortress. Federico Barbarossa also stopped in Manerba del Garda who granted the bishop of Verona rights over the country.
In 1426 Manerba was part of the Venetian Republic, becoming part of the Valtenesi.
With the arrival of the plague, in 1630, the population was decimated, so much so that from 1,550 people, at the end of the infection there were only 703. Not even Manerba was able to escape the terrible raids of the French troops during the war of the Spanish succession.
Among the illustrious personalities of Manerba we find the parish priest Alessandro Gualtieri who was much appreciated by the Austrian dominion as he opened a completely free grammar school, he became interested in agriculture with various noteworthy treatises. During the Risorgimento Manerba del Garda saw Giuseppe Garibaldi stationed in the fortress to study the movements of the Austrian troops.
What to see in Manerba del Garda
From the Rocca to its Park: the strong point of Manerba
Nature is definitely a strong point of this village: we certainly find the imposing Rocca di Manerba that stands out against the lake from above with the Archaeological Museum as another point of reference. This is also the starting point of one of the most beautiful excursions you can do on the entire lake. Starting from the Rocca, or from Pisenze, you will be able to walk through the many paths that cross the natural park below with Punta Sasso as a real reference.
If you start from the fortress you will have to make a steep descent which you will then have to go up again if you want to go back to where you started. Wear suitable clothes and shoes, because although not very difficult it is still challenging as a path. Especially if done during the hot summer days.
The complete route, without stopping at the Rocca di Manerba, connects Pisenze to Dusano, ideal for spending an afternoon strolling carrying a packed lunch and enjoying a whole day immersed in the nature of this park, with a stop at Punta Sasso to admire the lake from 'high.
The islands near Manerba
In the surroundings of this area you can admire not only crystal clear waters but also truly unique places, the two most characteristic islands of this portion of the lake can be included in the latter category: the island of San Biagio (also known as the island of rabbits) and the island of Garda.
Both of these islands have unique characteristics:
as for the island of Garda you can admire one of the buildings most beautiful nineteenth century in this area, in a unique park.
On the island of San Biagio, on the other hand, you will find crystal clear waters but, above all, the peculiarity lies in the possibility of reaching it directly on foot by walking on the water!
