The history of Moniga del Garda
The history of Moniga del Garda is similar to that of the other municipalities of the Brescia coast linked to the Roman domination, the barbarian invasions, the domination of Venice.
It seems that Moniga derives from the name of the Greek divinity Diana Munichia, perhaps venerated in antiquity, but there are those who believe it derives from the Germanic toponym "Morn" which means: exposed in the morning.
It is certainly known that Moniga has been inhabited since the Bronze Age of which stilts have been found in the locality of "Porto".
Of the Roman civilization there remains an ancient altar of the IV-V century, dedicated to the god of waters Neptune and now preserved at the entrance of the Town Hall.
Linked for centuries to the Republic of Venice, the inhabitants of Moniga have maintained the characteristic Venetian courtesy and particular attention in welcoming their guests.
Visit to the historic center of Moniga
Although in the last decades Moniga del Garda has expanded to follow the natural tourist development, the ancient core of the historic center still retains its narrow streets on which flowery balconies open and perfumed jasmine backs.
The historic center has not lost all the rustic aspect of the agricultural village that Moniga has been for centuries and, beyond the old doors, you can see the farmyards of the peasant houses still ready to welcome the products of the surrounding land. From the oldest part of the town, in the locality of "Pozzo", it is possible to see glimpses of the lake and architectural details certainly worth photographing.
The lakeside of Moniga del Garda
The town of Moniga del Garda, from the morainic hill descends gently towards Lake Garda on which it has built its small port, equipped with modern equipment for hauling boats, for their maintenance and supply.
The long walk by the lake that connects Moniga to Padenghe, in the summer days comes alive with tourists, mostly foreigners, and in the evening it offers a nice walk along the lakefront to enjoy an ice cream or a drink in one of the many outdoor bar.
On the lakeside of Moniga del Garda it is ideal for finding the right beach.
In fact, after having parked in the car parks before descending to the lake, for the most part for a fee, you go down to the beaches that offer stretches of free beach and other paid and equipped stretches.
Looking at the lake, the beaches on the right are all free beaches that lead to Padenghe and apart from a couple of kiosks, open only in high season, there are no particular services for tourists.
In this part of the lakeside of Moniga you will find suggestive reeds that serve as a shelter for the many swans and ducks.
Visit to the Church of Moniga
The parish church dedicated to San Martino, begun in the mid-fifteenth century and remodeled several times, the last of which at the end of the eighteenth century, is in Baroque style and preserves five altars and some painted altarpieces inside.
It was originally a "chapel" and depended, like all the churches in our area, from the Pieve di Santa Maria, in Manerba from which it broke away in 1454, when it was consecrated and dedicated to San Martino, protector of knights, soldiers, tailors and hosts.
Above the entrance portal, a large rectangular window opens which reproduces, in the colored glass, the scene of Saint Martin giving his cloak to the beggar.
The cuisine of Moniga del Garda
Moniga is certainly one of the main places in the Brescia area of Lake Garda from the food and wine point of view.
Moniga del Garda is located in the center of Valtenesi, renowned for its excellent cuisine and chiaretto wine, a typical rosé wine that has promoted Moniga del Garda the City of Chiaretto.
Every year this delicate rosé wine is celebrated with a dedicated festival called Italia in Rosa.
There is therefore no shortage of good quality restaurants in Moniga, and the tourist offer starts from the kiosks on the beach, the pizzeria, the trattoria and the more refined restaurant. Generally in the restaurants and trattorias of Moniga, especially on the lakeside, you can taste the lake fish cooked in any way.
Significant food and wine events are located in the town in the months from March to October.
Not to be missed in Moniga del Garda
To see at the entrance of the town, near the parish church of San Martino, the Castle of Moniga built in the tenth to face the raids of the Hungarians.
The white stone walls with the Ghibelline battlements of the Castle of Moniga surround a microscopic village consisting of four rows of houses and a few small gardens.
The ancient keep of the castle has become the bell tower of the nearby church and the terrain of the hill that surrounds it has been transformed into a welcoming Public Park.
Moniga despite being a small one country, offers its guests a wide choice to have fun and to devote themselves to both land and water sports.
So next to the equipped beaches where you can bask in the sun, Moniga has tennis courts, soccer fields, well-kept and signposted cycle paths such as the Valtenesi cycle path that goes from Salò to Lonato.
This route, which includes both the coastal and hilly municipalities of Garda, offers an unmissable opportunity to discover the medieval villages, parish churches and castles immersed in the Morainic Hills of Valtenesi.
