The history of Salò
Lying along the gulf of the same name sheltered from the winds, the town of Salò, thanks to its central position and close to the main communication routes, is considered a reference point for the whole area for the services offered and for its lively activities economic, administrative and commercial. But its importance is above all of a historical nature: Salò was the capital of the Magnifica Patria during the Venetian domination and the seat of numerous ministries of the fascist government of the Italian Social Republic.
Traces of this prestigious past are evident all along the promenade in the elegant old town, full of buildings of great historical and artistic value, as well as opportunities for shopping. Salò is particularly proud of the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria, built in 1524 from the Sansovino project, rebuilt after the 1901 earthquake and of the Cathedral built in the 15th century in late Gothic style where there are important artistic testimonies.
The tourist offer of this bustling town certainly does not stop here: even for lovers of sport and the outdoors there is the possibility of indulging in the itineraries along the hill behind the town or on the lakeside promenade that follows everything. the gulf.
What to see in Salò
The Cathedral
One of the first stops is the Cathedral of Salò which is also considered the central monument. Known since ancient times as the "parish church of Santa Maria", it is one of the masterpieces of classical architecture of the Renaissance Christian religion.
Inside you can find a magnificence of colors, marble columns, finely decorated altars, sculptures and frescoes that bring you back to the style of the Sistine chapel. The structure is really huge and the internal coloring takes you to an almost fairytale setting.
It is a work of great importance and all the tourists who have visited it have been fascinated by the richness of the details. One is immediately attracted to the large crucifix and the altar, where there is the "wooden Ancona" which was built by Bartolomeo da Isola Dovarese, in typical Gothic style. Inside there are the saints of the Pieve di Salò.
On the wall you can see the portrait of the virgin on the throne, which is dated 1300, a work very dear to the Vatican itself, both for the coloring and for the perfect state of conservation.
Since it is one of the works of great interest for the Catholic religion, a splendid fresco by Giambattista Trotti was painted in 1450. A magnificent work, very colorful and with contradictory messages, but which are one of the works that you absolutely must see in person to understand its "importance".
The Clock Tower
How about visiting one of the avant-garde structures in 1770 and which today is one of the main monuments of Salò. We are talking about the clock tower which for over 100 years was one of the engineering masterpieces that characterized this town.
Well, the great clock tower is really a "something different" that is worthy of a few hours of your time. It is a large structure, with a rectangular plan, designed to bring together the Gothic style, recalling some hamlets and architectures of a part of Salò, with decorations and wavy lines that recall the Renaissance style, also in honor of the Cathedral of this city.
It is one of the clearly visible monuments together with the Duomo. A small "gem" of this structure is the presence of the lion of San Marco, a typical symbol of the republic of Venice, which had Salò under its own dominion.
In the midst of the economic boom of the Venetian republic, various restoration works were carried out and also the revaluation of this city which was one of the places considered to be among the most prosperous of the time.
In fact, according to research and also on the basis of various testimonies, this structure was born in 200 AD and was used as a reinforcement of the protective walls to defend the city. Later it was then enlarged and "raised" so that it became a real stronghold.
Given its size and also its strategic location it was then restored and embellished becoming a "declaration" of its economic, strategic and also commercial power. Today it is one of the most beautiful eighteenth-century style monuments that we can find on the Italian territory.
