Lonato: history

The ancient village of Lonato is gathered around the Rocca and extends on the southern slopes of Mount Rova, from which it dominates the Brescia plain and the southern shore of Lake Garda.
The area, inhabited since prehistoric times, belonged to the Romans, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds, but the ancient Borgo was located about a kilometer north of the present center, around the Pieve di San Zeno. After the evangelization which took place around the 4th century, a church was erected, the Pieve di Lonato, a small castle and some houses defended by walls.
Under the Lombard rule in the seventh and eighth centuries, the market of Lonato became very important, the village grew larger, large palaces were built, becoming a politically important center, so much so that the king of the Lombards, who died on April 12, 614, ordered that be buried in the church of S. Giovanni Battista.

In the following centuries, to cope with the barbarian invasions, the inhabited center moved further south in a position of easier defense with fortifications on the Rocca and walls around the town to defend itself from the raids of the Hungarians in the 10th century.
In the 11th and 12th centuries Lonato was governed by the Bishops of Verona, the Counts of Montichiari and the Municipality of Brescia.
Involved in the struggle between Guelphs and Ghibellines and then in the Scaligeri wars, Lonato was often at the center of clashes and raids that were the cause of many mourning.
For this reason Lonato was transformed into a real fortress, defended by the Rocca, surrounded by strong walls with eleven towers, in three of which there are three doors.
