Gardone Riviera, Lake Garda's "botanical garden"
Renowned tourist resort, renowned health resort and seaside resort, Gardone Riviera can rightly be considered a real "botanical garden" where Central European, Mediterranean and sub-tropical vegetation alternates with the typical vegetation of Lake Garda. The numerous parks and gardens alternate along the shore of the lake with elegant historic villas that, since the end of the 19th century, had hosted an international clientele eager for relaxation, refinement and well-being.
Gardone Riviera offers its visitors a particular microclimate, luxuriant nature, an elegant atmosphere and a charming lakefront which during the summer season is the soul of musical and cultural events. The town is famous for the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the monumental citadel home of the poet Gabriele d'Annunzio, now home to a prestigious museum. Also not to be missed is the Hruska botanical garden, now the Andrè Heller Foundation, with hundreds of plant species from the five continents and visible in a path that winds between rocks and lakes.
What to see in Gardone Riviera
Gardone is known above all for the Vittoriale, but also for the variety of its prestigious twentieth-century, neo-classical, liberty, neo-gothic and even Moorish residences.
The development of Gardone took place above all in the twentieth century, thanks to the love for the lake and the entrepreneurial imagination of its citizens and the wonderful climate that characterizes this area: further proof of the mildness of Gardone's climate, on the other hand, it also offers the botanical garden that the naturalist Arturo Hruska created at the beginning of the twentieth century on the lakefront: it is one of the most interesting and original in Europe, where over 2000 alpine, Mediterranean and tropical plants coexist.
But the most famous monument in Gardone is, as already mentioned, the Vittoriale degli Italiani, a complex in which there are buildings, squares, avenues and fountains, wanted by the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio as a self-celebration of his genius. Among the buildings, the poet's house, which contains more than 30,000 books and where the poet died in 1938, the War Museum, the Mausoleum which houses the body of D'Annunzio. In the garden, we find the ship 'Puglia' donated to the poet by the Italian Navy, an auditorium which houses the airplane with which the writer made the famous flight over Vienna, the open-air theater.
