Toscolano Maderno, Lake Garda "botanical garden"
Located on the delta of the Toscolano torrent in a beautiful and sunny position, the town of Toscolano Maderno represents an important historical and economic reality in the Riviera dei Limoni and dei Castelli. The two towns of ancient Roman origin of Toscolano and Maderno, count on various commercial and tourist-hotel activities, as well as industrial ones.
In fact, it should not be forgotten that these places were the cradle of Italian paper production, which is still very active today; the ruins of the ancient factories - one of which has recently been converted into a museum - dot the Valle delle Cartiere, one of the most interesting industrial archeology routes in Northern Italy.
Both in Maderno and in Toscolano the testimonies of artistic value concern above all the basins of the respective squares, rich in churches of ancient origins. This area of the Riviera is also very happy from a naturalistic point of view and offers the visitor countless opportunities to practice sporting activities from trekking, to horse riding, to golf.
What to see in Toscolano Maderno
Toscolano Maderno extends over two large strips, with the major towns on the lake and the hamlets in the hills. Toscolano and Maderno are two distinct centers: the first of industrial nature, the second aimed at tourism, they have grown over time divided only by a small bridge over the debris of the Toscolano stream. They were united in a single municipality in 1928.
Toscolano, in particular, boasts Roman origins, testified by the remains of a large villa of which, today, parts of the floor decorated with mosaics can be seen.
Where now stands the parish church of Maderno, there was once a castle with four towers, one of which serves as the bell tower of the parish church. There are no documents that testify to the time of construction of the castle. In 1630 during the plague the entire castle was used as a lazaret. In 1645 a fire completely destroyed the castle leaving few skeletons of walls. These ruins remained so until the construction of the parish church.
What to do in Toscolano Maderno
You can really relax walking on Lake Garda, or reactivate your body by jogging and water sports near the historic center, including canoes and diving, rowing, sailing and the recent paddle surfing, to be discovered.
And not just water sports: the territory of Toscolano and Maderno offers various routes for mountain biking, trekking, horseback riding; but also golf courses and paragliding.
Among the most popular beaches is Bau Beach, designed for those who want to bring their domestic friends with them.
There is certainly no shortage of bars and restaurants for aperitifs, lunches and dinners, or to have an ice cream; they are widespread above all in the small port, the landing in the village which in the past represented the natural link to reach the Republic of Venice.
Lungolago Zanardelli is the most famous of the Garda "promenades", it runs along the lake and allows a route from the entrance of the Gulf of Maderno to Lido degli Ulivi in Toscolano.
On the lakefront there are also historic buildings linked to the events of the period of the Republic of Salò, such as the former Villa Cavallero, home of Alessandro Pavolini (Founder of the Black Brigades of the Republic since 1944); nearby is also the former Villa Bianchi (today Hotel Golfo, which was the seat of the Fascist Republican Party and the command of the Brigades).
Also on the Zanardelli embankment you can see an anchor recovered from the lake in 2011, dating back to the First World War - in 1918 a buoy was stopped on the anchor for the mooring of three armed torpedo boats (MAS) of the Italian Navy. Today the Anchor of the M.A.S. it is a war memorial.
Among the walks to do in the countryside, there is the one in the Ghirardi Botanical Garden, open from Monday to Saturday in the morning, with free admission. In the Bernini Park there is the largest tree in the whole lake, an imposing Himalayan cedar of over 2 meters in diameter. In the Serraglio park, once the Gonzaga park, you can find statues, mulberry trees and citrus fruits with intoxicating scents (oranges, lemons, cedars).
