Number of views: 1201
From September 14th to 17th, 2023, the twenty-first edition of Tocatì, the International Street Games Festival, organized by the Association of Ancient Games in collaboration with the Municipality of Verona, will take place, featuring Portugal as the guest of honor this year.
An Extraordinary Recognition
This year is particularly special as Tocatì has sealed its status as a cultural excellence. In December 2022, during the 17th Intergovernmental Committee of the 2003 UNESCO Convention held in Morocco, Tocatì was officially included in the Register of Good Practices for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This prestigious recognition makes Tocatì a reference point for enthusiasts of traditional games and sports worldwide, being the first Italian example to receive such an honor.
Guest of Honor: Portugal
Portugal is the guest of honor, bringing alive traditional games and sports from its culture and history. These games are imprinted in the memory of local communities and represent a unique form of entertainment. Tocatì provides an opportunity to discover and participate in these traditions with a spirit of cultural sharing.
The streets and squares of Verona will be transformed into spaces dedicated to a variety of spectacular Traditional Games and Sports. Among these, "Jogo del Beto," a game that involves strategy and agility while defending a position with converging wooden sticks. "Jogo da Malha" will showcase local variations like "Na Base" and "Chinquilho" from Portugal. Additionally, Italian gaming communities will bring unique traditions such as "To’ Vegna" and the Ciociaro game of "Corsa con la Cannata."
Art, Music, and Theater
Tocatì is not just games but also art, music, and theater. Venues like Teatro Romano will be the stage for concerts with internationally renowned artists like Ginevra di Marco and Teresa Salgueiro, a celebrated Portuguese voice. Music represents a universal language, and Fado and Canto Lantejano, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, will resonate throughout Verona with their magic.
In the Courtyard of Castelvecchio, theater will come to life with the play "Ianez! Io, Sandocan e Salgari," performed by Bam! Bam! Teatro.
Gastronomy and Local Culture
Palazzo Forti will host the gaming tavern, a convivial space where typical products of Verona will be offered. Managed by the festival's historic volunteers, this place is always highly appreciated by the youth.
Tocatì 2023 promises to be an extraordinary event, uniting games, culture, music, and art in a celebration of intangible cultural heritage and cultural sharing. A unique opportunity to immerse oneself in age-old traditions and build connections between communities from around the world.
